DAY SEVEN - 30/07/11 - DAY OFF
I woke up slightly earlier than normal because our patrol 'B', were on duty so had to cook breakfast. We decided to make something slightly less ordinary so cooked pancakes and bacon which went down very well.
We had a free day all day because we had had dream the night before which was meant to go on until around 3am, but because we got to the front of the queue we finished before midnight.
For most of the day we wen't around swapping and meeting new people. I also went to the shop and took my phone back off Simon which had mysteriously gone down in charge when he was meant to be charging it.
I also went to meet Nick who took my phone to charge properly. After that I tried the showers which were mainly communal. When I came back to the campsite, the leaders looked at my elbow after I'd cut it in Copenhagen, and decided that being under a plaster for so long wasn't good and told me it had gone right down to the bone. Alan then put butterfly stitches on and decided it was better to be left open.
During the afternoon, the sun finally came out and started to dry the ground really quickly!
At 4:00pm, our patrol wen't back to our campsite to decided on dinner. We then went to the campsites supermarket and bought everything before going back to cook. We then cooked dinner and severally burnt the rice which was not nice. Rosie, Chris and I had to spend almost half and hour getting the water out because it had gone all starchy.
After we'd eaten and washed up, me Harry and Emily went around summer swapping until just before 11pm when we had to be back at our campsite. We then signed in and went to bed.
Kathryn, our unit leader who sadly was unable to come to the Jamboree, sent an email round every day about what our unit had been doing from what Kev and other leaders/IST had texted her. You can find what she said about this day below:
"Well the day started off wet again - the site is surprisingly not getting too muddy as the soil is very sandy and so it is draining away quite quickly, a good job I think as otherwise could be quite like Glastonbury by now.
So the young people have been away then for a week now and what a week they have had, I know from experience that when your travellers return and they have caught up on sleep that they will have so much to tell you that months later they will be still telling you tales of what they saw and who they met.
Yesterday morning was a quiet morning for the Unit, with some socialising to be done, the next door neighbours are Italians and Americans and for those who are into badge swapping there are plenty of opportunities to be had. Every night different Scouts come and go for meals, the whole world in a campsite is a pretty amazing experience, sharing cultures, traditions and food.
Each Patrol takes it in turns to go to the supermarket to get the food and they try to get the food for evening meal and breakfast at the same time, the somewhat limiting factor is that it is so heavy to carry food for forty people for two meals across a camp site in the rain.
In the afternoon the Sun appeared at last and 39,000 people cheered in unison - not sure that people often cheer for the Sun shine but after many days of rain I am sure it was a very welcome sight.
Back here at WSJ in Bristol Julian and I went to dinner with Jake Buftons Mum and Dad, Jake will be pleased he was away as when the Bufton's and the Challis's meet it is always a bit of a long night. Neil and Angela went to so much effort and did a WSJ dinner, with each course from a different country for me and even the drinks were themed - so last night I had my own little Jamboree. Thank you Neil and Angela.
Best wishes to you all from
Kathryn
