DAY ELEVEN - 03/08/11 - PEOPLE AND THE PIZZA

GUESS WHO???!!!

We woke up on Wednesday, and had breakfast, cooked by Kevin's patrol 'D'. After we'd washed up, we were told that there might be a special Pizza surprise later on. Afterwards, Rosie went to the leaders meeting again so we went to our Module Activity - 'People' with Mike as our leader.

We were a little bit late, so had to queue for a while. When we got in, we went to the first of the four sections in 'People'. The first activity, was where we had a series of picture cards and we had to choose one and describe what it meant to us. We then went onto a section where we had to choose three beads and plait them together which took us quite a while. We then went to the second section of 'People' - 'the garden of reflection'. In there, we first went on a walk of our life which was where we walked along a short path which had memerories which could have been from our childhood (toys etc...). We then went into a 'story telling tent' where calm music was put on, and a gentle story about us with friends in the woods was told to us. While we were there several of our patrol and the other patrols, fell asleep. We then went onto the next 'People' section which was a performance on the 'People Stage'. It was very cheesy but still quite entertaining although it was so hot and much as there was plenty of shade for the rest of 'People', there was none near the stage so we found it hard to concentrate. After the performance had finished, we went onto the last 'People' activity - the rafa rafa. This was an activity where two patrols from different nationalities come together. They each choose a President and two ambassadors. They then have to invent a culture which includes greetings, special greetings for the president, things your not allowed to do etc... The two ambassadors from the other patrol (in our case a Swedish patrol) had to come an join in our culture just by picking it up while our ambassadors did the same with the Swedish culture. Our culture involved slapping people on the back of their heads to greet them (front of the head for the president), never making eye contact and screaming as loud as possible if you do.
After we had finished that, which was good fun, we were given our 'People' bead. We then went to 'the castle' (the UK food house) where we had arranged to meet the other patrols, but they all still had about an hour to go. Me, Emily and Kate then went to the UK pavilion and got them to play our video which was great! Me and Kate then went to the Summer town center which was nearby and found Nick who I gave my phone to again to charge. She told us about how she had made bracelets out of nettles and done other bush-crafty things with Simon that morning after going off site to look around the local area. We then went back to 'the castle' where we arrived just before the other patrols. When they got there, we all came together for a group photo when we heard Rosie of the leaders radio saying "the pizza is out of the oven and is on its way". A few minutes later, Rosie and Kev came in, practicably skipping, followed by.........KATHRYN! - aka- 'the pizza'. We all went over to hug her and then had some group photos with her. Afterwards, Rosie gave Kathryn her Necker and I.D card so she could come with us to the beach! Some people stayed behind and Kev and Rosie stayed with them.
We went over to the beach bus stop, which was by the main arena and queued from about minutes before the coach came. The coach drove us through the military base and to the beach which was very close. We then all went into the woods to get changed before running into the Baltic sea - which was surprisingly warm. We swam and splashed about in the sea for about an hour before getting out and sitting in the sun. At 6:00pm we got back on the coach, and went back to our campsite where Anna's patrol cooked Sausage/Veggie sausage stroganoff for dinner. In the evening, we chatted to Kathryn and did some swapping as well as speaking to Simon who came to visit. We then signed in and went to bed.

Kathryn, our unit leader who sadly was unable to come to the Jamboree, BUT WAS ABLE TO COME FOR THIS DAY AND THE NEXT!!! sent an email round every day about what our unit had been doing from what Kev and other leaders/IST had texted her - AND HER OWN EXPERIENCE!!!. You can find what she said about this day below:

"Good morning everyone

Firstly I apologise for not doing the update yesterday, I had a rather busy day, I had a little adventure all of my own.   I left home at midnight and after a car journey, a coach journey, a plane trip, a train journey and a bus journey and fourteen hours later…….

I FINALLY ARRIVED AT THE REAL WSJ HEADQUARTERS IN SWEDEN!!  I WAS SO SO EXCITED AND SO HAPPY TO BE ABLE TO JOIN THE UNIT - WHAT FUN..  I hope you all think that this is a good enough excuse not to send an email.

So I am sat at camp surrounded by lots of happy, young people and some rather happy leaders, I can report to you all that there are lots of tired people here but everyone is having a fantastic time.

WEDNESDAY

Another sunny day for camp and the unit had another module activity, People, this involved 'watching a useless stage performance' (Sam Freeman), 'going to a garden to reflect on inner peace' (Alice), 'Story telling tent - where we all had a little sleep' (Josh).
Not sure that this was the best and most enjoyable part of the day!!!

In the afternoon Alan and Anna got all the Unit together in the UK part of the campsite, Rosie waited for me at the camp site and Kev met me off the bus from town.  I threw my bag in my tent, and then walked to the UK area and appeared around the corner.  I got totally mobbed by 36 kids and got hugged to within an inch of my life - I am so pleased to be here with everyone and was very touched by how pleased everyone is to see me - am still smiling now…

The unit was off to the beach and so I went with them as well, we went on a short bus ride and then we were at the sea, there was so many people there and was so good to be there, the sun shone and all the unit went for a swim (or/ and a wash), and led in the sun and chatted.  Gary had a great time in the sea as well and I think was probably in there longer than the rest of the kids and had the biggest smile on his face!

We left the beach at 6.30 caught then very international bus back to the site and then came back for a pasta tea.   I am delighted to be able to tell you that all the unit is getting stuck into the tasks, water carrying, gas collection, food preparation and cleaning, I am sure they will be all bring these skills back home with them - or maybe not…

After the washing up was done and the camp was cleaned up then the Unit had some free time, there is a steady stream of young people from all over the world, saying hello, or seeing if they can swap something.  Lots of smiles and lots of laughing all around the campsite as people just catch up with each other and just enjoy meeting each other.

The camp site is so very friendly, and it hard for me to be able to express the lovely atmosphere, the camp site is huge and as you walk around there are groups of people socialising, I am sat in a cafe at the moment and outside there is a group practicing a type of martial art/dancing with sticks, this morning a group  visited our sub camp and brought us a flavour or their Christmas celebrations singing songs and even their Father Christmas came to call.  Last night a Brazilian drum band played some great music and people just stopped to dance and enjoy - all this and I have been on camp less than one day.  This is repeated all over the camp site, music, dancing and food from every nationality.  It really is all the World in one field - Scouting is such an amazing organisation and is just so lovely to see this whole event being enjoyed by so many young people with no barriers between them all.

So here I am, sat with Lucy who luckily has a day off today so Lucy and I can spend some of our day together, Kev is sat here as well in a ridiculous pair of trousers and a very, very bright t shirt!!

The Sun is just now coming out and the young people are looking forward to the International Food day and all the activities that are due to take place including Avonasauraus hosting a bingo game for our inter national neighbours.

I will do my best to update again tomorrow but am heading home tomorrow.

You should all be so very proud of your young people and as their leader I am incredibly proud of them and what they have achieved.

Kathryn
